Old Silkstone Band needs you!

We have just taken part in the Yorkshire Regional Championships, in the 1st section, where we performed Symphony of Marches by Gilbert Vinter which gained us a very credible 2nd place! 🎺🏆🎶

This now means we have qualified to go on and represent Yorkshire at the National Finals, in Cheltenham this September!

We are looking for a Cornet player (position negotiable) to join us and our Musical Director, John Hopkinson.

We are a very friendly, hard working and social team. We perform a variety of different concerts throughout the year from very traditional ones to a few fancy dress themed ones in there too.

The band enjoyed a trip to Ireland in 2018 and we will be looking forward to going there again in the future.

We rehearse on Wednesdays, 8pm - 10pm, and also Sundays, 7pm - 9pm.

We rehearse at Silkstone Common Methodist Church near Barnsley.

If you are interested in a new challenge and would like some more information please get in touch, in confidence. Contact Danni Brookes, our Band Secretary, on 07540240703 or drop her a message via Facebook or Twitter.

About the Band

Rehearsals now held in Silkstone Common Methodist Church Sunday 7pm -9pm & Wednesday 8pm – 10pm

155 years is a long time for any musical tradition to survive, especially with the distractions of modern life, but that’s how long our community has enjoyed a village band.

Formed in 1861, Old Silkstone Band has maintained the characteristics of a typical village band, performing at local events and venues whilst representing the communities of Silkstone, Silkstone Common and Barnsley both nationally and internationally. Hard work and dedication has moulded the band into a strong musical team that has in recent years competed against the very best brass band’s the country has to offer.

As ambassadors for the local council, the band has been privileged to perform in the presence of royalty on several occasions, both in the UK and abroad. We have forged links in Schwäbisch Gmünd (Barnsley’s twin town), Austria, Paris and St Florent des Bois (Silkstone’s twin town in the Vendee). In July 2015 several members of the band also competed, as guests of the Carrick on Suir band, in the Clonakilty Brass Band Championship in Southern Ireland.

The band, apart from enjoying a brief period of sponsorship, has always been self-supporting. Themed concerts are now held quarterly in the Bluebell Wood Banqueting Suite at The Fairway in Dodworth.  These themed concerts include  a ‘Silkstone does Strictly’ concert featuring the Maria Penrose School of Dance, Silkstone Does Disney an afternoon of fun with the band dressed up as Disney characters and in October we hold our ever popular Oktoberfest concert with Barnsley’s Frumptarn Guggenband playing their unique part.

Not only does the band continue to play and support the local community and the church the band play at venues as diverse as York races, Wetherby bandstand, St Georges Hall in Bradford, Huddersfield Town Hall, Barnsley Town centre, Barnsley Live, Tour de Yorkshire, Bolsover, Cheltenham race course.

Locally you can hear us at ‘Silkstone Sing’ in July, the church Harvest Festival in October and on parade for Armistice Day. Our annual Christmas concert in the church has no fixed date but continues to take place every December. Christmas village collections are a tradition, as is the carol collection on Boxing Day around Silkstone. Couple all this with practices twice weekly, contests and other fund raising events and you realise the commitment all band members put in to keep their village band alive and kicking.

Work is underway to reform a junior/training band and we urge any interested children or parents to contact us regarding this. We have secured the services of 2 qualified brass teachers to teach any interested players young or old and further develop the band through our own community.

The band now competes in the first section of the British Brass Band Championships; securing promotion in February 2016, following a 2nd place at the Yorkshire Brass Band Championships for the second consecutive year, a first in the history of the band!

At the Yorkshire Regional1st Section contest held in Huddersfield in March 2019, the band gained 2nd place , the bands highest placing at the contest in its history and will now go on to represent Yorkshire at the National Finals in Cheltenham in September 2019. The 3rd time the band have attended the National finals in 5 years, this time however it will be in the 1st section !!

With this result the band await the decision of the Yorkshire regional committee to decide whether the band have gained promotion to the Championship section.
